Is the world ready for Fox Weather? And will they turn climate change even more political? Stay tuned! |
Yes, I know we already have had an all meteorological cable network for decades with The Weather Channel, but Fox believes there's room for more.
The question, this being Fox, will they offer serious weather and climate information, or will this just be another Fox propaganda platform creating the "alternative reality" that climate change is just fiction?
The betting seems to be that it will all be a sham, and people are piling on.
We've already had a cable weather network for decades in The Weather Channel, and they are already throwing shade, or clouds, or whatever at Fox Weather. "They couldn't even get a headline right about Tropical Storm Bill," the Weather Channel chief content officer Nora Zimmett told the New York Times.
If you've never heard of Tropical Storm Bill, you're forgiven. It was a fairly weak tropical storm that formed off the South Carolina coast in mid June, then adhering to accurate forecasts, immediately went out to sea and died, with no trouble for us in the United States.
Yet Fox News in its web site promos declared Bill "a massive threat."
Or not.
Washington Post columnist Alexandra Petri imagines the program listing for Fox Weather, among the gems she envisions:
"Worst Weather Moments Of The Obama Administration"
"Dangerous Hurricane Now Making Its Way From Foreign Waters To Your Home Because Joe Biden Isn't Strong Enough"
Comedian Trae Crowder, known as the Liberal Redneck, already posted his take on the concept to his YouTube channel. He quotes an imagined Fox Weather personality: "Fox Weather: Where the forecast is either perfect or the liberals' fault somehow."
Liberal Redneck also said the weather up until now was the only safe haven for conversation with these people. He also asks whether this is going to just be the climate denial network.
Given the history of Fox "News" the answer to that question is probably. The always hilarious Tucker Carlson, still in permanent meltdown mode, says, among other things, climate change is just a plot to ban meat and shrink the size of our children, somehow.
Fox News pundits have also declared climate change as just a war on air conditioning or to just basically control our lives for laughs and giggles. Or something like that.
Some meteorologists are a little more optimistic about Fox Weather. Quoted in Mother Jones, John Morales, a Miami meteorologist and certainly one who is worried about climate change, says he's hopeful Fox Weather will hire reputable meteorologist who report on science, not right wing talking points.
Morales notes that meteorologists on Fox News, such as Maria Molina, are serious scientists with excellent reputations actually tell it like it is.
So, we'll wait and see.
I personally am not particularly optimist about Fox Weather, but it could prove to be the source of more Fox Network jokes.
Trouble is, climate change isn't always so amusing.
