The anticipated snow did move into northern Vermont last night, but was more confined to the mountains than expected.
To me, that's a very good thing. Let the skiers and riders have their snow, but it being March now, I'd just as soon not have any more.
Still, judging from web cams, it doesn't look like the snow overnight was nearly as widespread as expected.
Bolton and Jericho, along the west slopes of the Green Mountains, often get a few inches of snow out of this type of weather situation, but web cams only indicate a dusting at best this time
At least so far.
The web cams also indicate as of this morning, it has pretty much stopped snowing in the mountains for now. There seems to be less moisture in the atmosphere over us than originally forecast, which would explain the relative lack of snow.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending upon your point of view, it does look like another wave of snow will come through later today.
This will help make the storm total on the summits of the northern Green Mountains likely exceed six inches, which is nice.
Most valley locations will see only an inch or so of snow, total, with locally more along and north of Route 2.
The main story will be the cold weather today through the weekend. Blustery north winds will continue, and many of us won't get out of the teens for highs today. Wind chills today and tomorrow will be in the single digits and teens below zero. It'll barely make it into the low 20s for many of us Saturday, and into the mid 20s Sunday with more sun.
Low temperatures Saturday through Monday morning will be in the single digits either side of zero. All this makes it feel like spring will never get here.
Or maybe it will! For fans of spring weather, it still looks we have dramatic changes coming up, at least for a few days next week.
Monday will be better, still chilly with highs in the low to mid 30s. But there will be some sun, so it'll be OK.
Tuesday through Thursday will be the real blast of spring. Many of us will get into the 50s for highs, especially Wednesday and Thursday, at least as it looks now.
For those of you, like me, who are getting slightly claustrophobic with the snow still on the ground, we will lose a fair amount of it. Not all of it, mind you, but it'll be a start.
I imagine there will be some spectacular sap runs in the upcoming week, too. For all you maple sugar makers out there, get your sleep this weekend. You're going to be terribly busy next week.
We'll have to watch and see how much rain comes along with the snow melt toward the end of next week. A little rain won't be a big deal. But if storms coming in from the west end up dropping a lot of rain, we could be in some flood trouble with the snow melt going on as well.
