Still Some Rain, But Backing Off On Drought Optimism

Damp and overcast with hints of fall color in my
St. Albans, Vermont yard this morning, but needed
substantial rain is largely avoiding us.
Maybe I was a bit overly optimistic in yesterday's post about drought-denting rainfall, as the inevitable forecast adjustment is slightly bad news.

It's still going to rain, at least in central and southern Vermont, but not as hard as first forecast. Southern New England, where the drought is generally even worse, still looks like it will get a nice soaking. So somebody wins!

The weak storm riding along a stalling front won't have as much oomph to it as previous forecast cycles promised.

So, instead of a nice one to three inch soaking in far southern Vermont, and a decent amount in central Vermont, things are looking a bit drier. I'd say the far south, like Bennington and Brattleboro, could still see an inch of rain out of this, which is OK.

According to latest forecasts, once you get up toward Rutland, expected rainfall diminishes to a quarter to a third of an inch.  Montpelier will manage barely that. The prediction for Burlington is a tenth of an inch of rain or less.

Up by the Canadian border, any rain that does fall has or will come this morning. It will be hit and miss in nature. One brief downpour bullseyed my place in St. Albans, Vermont early this morning, but it was quick and didn't amount to much.

The main show with the steady rain tomorrow afternoon and night will pretty much miss areas north of Route 2.  So  yeah, sorry to get you excited about the rain in yesterday's post.

Worse, it's still looking like an extended dry spell will start Tuesday. I would say the next chance of rain after tomorrow won't be for another week.

Even though the drought isn't as bad as it could be,  you want ground water replenishment and nice moist earth heading into winter. To alleviate Vermont's worsening drought, it looks like we should pray for some really soggy nor'easters later this autumn.
