A few people enjoying Oakledge Park in Burlington, with some swimmers in Lake Champlain, as the area experienced its hottest October day on record this afternoon. |
At last report, the temperature in Burlington, Vermont reached at least 86 degrees today. That sets a new record for the hottest temperature on record for the entire month of October.
I'm writing this at 4 p.m. Wednesday. It's possible the temperature could go up another degree or so.
The previous record was a tie between October 11, 1949 and October 17, 1947, when both days reached 85 degrees.
I'll have a lot more details and explanations on this in tomorrow morning's post. Spoiler alert: Monthly high temperature records have been falling at an awfully quick pace. Four all time new record monthly highs have been established just in the past eight years.
It's almost as if climate change is re-writing the record books.
Tomorrow, more daily record highs are threatened in Vermont, but today was the peak. It'll be a couple to a few degrees cooler on Thursday than today. But still incredibly warm for October,
If you are looking forward to much colder weather, that's still on for Sunday and into next week. Highs will only reach the 50s during that period. That's only slightly cooler than average for October.
Yeah, today was super wild.
