First Widespread Snow Showers Of Season Finally Hit Vermont

A few snowflakes fall in front of some lingering fall foliage
in Georgia, Vermont on Wednesday.
Many Vermont valley locations - along with a lot of hillside spots - finally had their first snowfalls of the season on Wednesday.

Better late than never, I guess. That is, if you're a fan of snow.

Web cams and reports showed some brief accumulations as some of the snow showers yesterday were briefly heavy. That allowed an inch or so to pile up in some towns, like Jericho and West Bolton.

Although I don't have any reports from mountain tops in Vermont, I'm pretty sure there was several inches up there. The summit of Mount Mansfield reported 0.59 inches of melted precipitation on Wednesday and the temperature never did climb above freezing all day up there.

I'd estimate that amount of precipitation translates to six inches of new snow.

In the Champlain Valley, a little snow and graupel mixed with a heavy midday shower at the National Weather Service office in South Burlington. That's their first trace of snow for the season.  For the record, it also snowed a little at my house in St. Albans, Vermont for the first snow of the season I've seen here.

On average, the National Weather Service office has their first trace of snow on October 15, so it was late this year.  I don't immediately have access to these records, but I don't think yesterday's first snow in Burlington was the latest on record. Just kinda late.

We're in a dry weather pattern for now, so don't expect much precipitation of any kind for the next several days at least. There probably will be a few light rain or snow showers around today, but they will be much less widespread or heavy than yesterday.

A modest warming trend and continued dry weather through the weekend means snow lovers are going to have to wait longer to really bask in winter white.
