Weather Video Time: Viral Drama From Late Summer/Early Autumn

Damage from a Wisconsin tornado the summer. It was one
of the most video'd tornado I have seen. A couple o
those videos are in this post,

Time to review some of the more dramatic videos we've seen since the second half of summer. It was a stormy one, with repeated bouts of tornadoes, extreme thunderstorms, and floods.

Then there's other videos worth watching, just because they're fascinating from a weather entertainment or meteorological aspect.

Let's get into it.

On July 21,  devastating flash flooding hit parts of West Virginia, killing two people. In this video, home surveillance captured Jonny Reed hastily grabbed his son, threw him in his pickup truck and drove as far as he could up a muddy hill across the street.

The surveillance video then shows stuff floating by in the racing water, including an entire shed. Click on this link to view, or if you see the image below click on that.

Getting away from the scary weather this summer and fall, we can sometimes laugh at bad weather, too. You know, the close misses, the mishaps, and laughable weirdness that bad weather can bring. American's Funniest Home Videos gives us a nice long compilation of lightning close hits, slips on the ice, wind blowing things like trampolines away and such.

It's worth the chuckles of lousy weather has you down. Click on this link to view, or if you see the image below, click on that.

This isn't a current video, but it's fascinating look at the haunting immediate aftermath of a calamity.

Late on the evening of May 16, 2025 a powerful EF-4  swept along a long path through Kentucky. The twister slammed into the town of London, Kentucky.

The YouTube channel Midwest Safety usually features body cam footage of police dealing with weird and/or violent crime incidents. This one is different. The body cam video shows police and sheriff deputies  responding in the immediate aftermath of the tornado.

It's dark, there's debris everywhere, and it's chaotic as hell. Worse, police have been warned another large tornado is on the way. The sheriff deputies are all professional, but you can hear the fear and horror in their voices.

They bash into each destroyed house, "Sheriff Office! Is anybody here? Hello?" Firefighters are also doing the same thing.

Sometimes, with great relief, they find uninjured families or elderly couples. Other times, they found injured people and led them to safety. Then they found the deceased. A couple tossed from their home, lying dead on the side of the road.

A deceased woman in the ruins of a home. And a fellow firefighter is discovered passed away, too.

Strong tornadoes become somewhat more rare by late July in the upper Midwest. The core of severe weather season, when big twisters tend to hit, usually are from April to June.

But a strong tornado hit northeast Wisconsin on July 27, trashing large sections of Menasha, Neenah and Appleton.  For some reason, when I see extensive tornado damage, it's usually relatively new construction.

Most of the damage hit older construction. It was interesting to see what an EF-3 tornado can do to old houses. Here the homes were destroyed, but seemed to hold together better than in new construction.

Here's a drone video of Menasha. Click on this link to view, or if you see the image below, click on that.

The tornado in Wisconsin crossed Lake Winnebago.  The twister was strong enough to cause what you might call either a meteotsunami or seiche. Whatever it was, the tornado appears to cause weird fluctuations in the water level.  This video, taken at Adella Beach in Neenah, Wisconsin showed weird abrupt changes in water level,  Sometimes hard to see, since the storm itself was still going full blast.

One more Menasha, Wisconsin tornado video. This guy most of the tornado on his front porch. Before it hit, when the wind was still pretty calm, the tornado siren and the intensifying roaring sound should have been a clue.

As you can see the wind does increase, until the surrounding trees disintegrate, and then power lines, then the power poles collapse and sections of his roof fly over the guy. Only then does he decided to go indoors.

A wild bit of bad luck hit a man driving a pickup truck along Interstate 15 near Cedar City, Utah in a thunderstorm. His vehicle was hit by lightning. That's rare enough, but every once in awhile we hear about it. In this case not only did the truck die, it also burst into flames.

On the bright side, the driver of the truck didn't die, didn't burst into flames. He's alive and well. The man is a contractor, and lost a few thousand dollars worth of tools in the fire too. But his son, age 9, offered to give the money he'd been saving for a dirt bike to his father, which touched dad in the best possible way.

Up in Ilulissat, on Greenland's west coast, a huge iceberg arrived in late July, towering above the sea and the town.

As the YouTube channel afarTV shows, on July 25, the iceberg dramatically turned mostly upside down and huge piece of it collapsed. It flipped likely because melting and pieces falling off changed its center of gravity.

The video shows an hour long view of the collapsing iceberg. It really is fascinating to watch.   Click on this link to view or if you see the image below, click on that.

Severe flooding in Cambridge City, Indiana on August 12, from the Chris Weather Chasing channel. Video shows water rescues and deep water swirling through the town.  Click on this link to view, or if you see the image below, click on that.

This is kind of a sad video. An older man drives through Anderson, Indiana floodwaters on a three wheel motorcycle. The current was swift and he was almost swept away. But he made it to calmer water before the motorcycle died.  This was all capture by a Fox 59 news reporter.

The man was angry with himself and seemed a little confused. He said he didn't see the water, and said his ruined trike meant he had no means of transportation anymore.

Aaron Rigsby brings us dramatic views of the extreme flooding in Hawaii when Hurricane Lala sideswiped the Big Island on August 14. The power of the water you see in the video is incredible, and the devastation afterward is sobering. Click on this link to view the video, of if you see the image below, click on that.

A large tornado hit Pomas, France on August 24, injuring 39 people and damaging about 300 homes. France has tornadoes occasionally, but this one was much bigger than France usually sees.

At an industrial type business, it turns out they had incredibly durable surveillance camera. We capture the approaching tornado and its direct hit from every possible angle. Fascinating to watch. Click on this link to view, or if you see the image below, click on that.

Video from a doorbell camera shows a man in Staten Island being struck buy lightning as we walked along a sidewalk. Miraculously, he suffered no serious injuries. He said he bought a lottery ticket a few days later to mark the occasion. No word on whether he won anything.
