Friday Evening Vermont Storm Update: Threat Easing, But Not Over Yet

The sky over St. Albans, Vermont still looked uncertain
as of 6:30 p.m Friday, but the western sky was
brightening, bringing hope that yet another
active weather day in Vermont was calming down.
As expected, today was another active weather day in Vermont in a summer that has given us near constant trouble.

Happily, though things got bad in a few spots, it could have been way worse

I was a bit worried when it appeared some very heavy rain was headed toward Middlebury earlier today. The area had that awful flash flood last evening.

That area of rain weakened as it came into Vermont. Though the downpours prompted a flash flood warning just north of the main flood zone in Middlebury, not much was reported,

However, it looks like the Rutland area got hit by trouble today.  Several trees were reported down in Rutland, West Rutland, Middletown Springs and Wallingford.

We also have several reports of flooding in Rutland and Springfield. I'll have more info on damage reports tomorrow morning.

ANY MORE TROUBLE?

Let's just get through this evening, so here's what I think will happen:

A cold front is coming in that would end the trouble with today's weather, but it's a slow process. As of 6 p.m. I am seeing a slow decline in thunderstorm activity.

A band of thunderstorms approaching Vermont from the northwest was falling apart as it entered the state as of 6 p.m. It could re-invigorate, but so far so good.

If there will be any more severe storms or flash flooding this evening, it is most likely south of Route 2, with the best chances south of Route 4. But even then, I think - fingers crossed - the worst is over.

It'll be all over by 10 p.m., so we can relax after that.

The weekend is looking gorgeous, so we have that.

More batches of showers are due Monday night and Tuesday, and late in the upcoming week. From this vantage point, neither episode looks scary. Just standard issue garden variety summer showers, which is good news.

I am a little nervous over long range forecasts which seem to indicate lots of warmth, humidity and potentially heavy rain mid-month. But long range forecasts are unreliable, so let's forget that for now.
