After a relative lull in our nation's springtime battle against severe weather (though Texans would argue with that assertion), big bad sometimes dangerous weather is looming again for much of the nation.
The first day of an expected several days of severe weather and tornadoes will come Monday, with a focus on the central Plains of the United States. |
Tornadoes, gorilla hail, flooding and even snow will beset some parts of the nation in the upcoming week.
Before the big weather show starts today and to a greater extent tomorrow, we really have acknowledge how Texas has really been getting hammered.
Several tornadoes - a few of them strong - hit western Texas over the past couple days. One of them caused serious damage in Hawley, Texas. Several houses were destroyed.
Western Texas has dealt with damaging tornadoes for two days now, and today is another dangerous day out there. The areas around Midland, Odessa and San Angelo seem to be most at risk.
The incident included a dramatic rescue by storm chasers of a family who was injured while the tornado blew their house apart.
Eastern Texas has endured several days of severe flooding. At least a foot of rain fell in places a little north of Houston. The resulting flood was the worst since the catastrophic Hurricane Harvey floods of 2017.
NEXT UP
A pretty substantial storm for this late in the season is plowing into California this weekend, and that will be the main player in the next really big tornado and severe storm threat, which ramps up starting on Monday.
Initially, it's an unseasonably cold storm. Way out of season winter weather advisories were up until this morning in northwestern California. A winter storm warning was up in the Sierra Nevada range. That's the latest in the season in at least recent memory that the National Weather Service office in Reno has issued such a warning.
Even before the worst of the severe weather hits next week flooding will continue in the South. Area in yellow is at risk Sunday. Flooding to continue in many areas beyond that date. |
Five to eight inches of snow were expected near Lake Tahoe, which is wicked late for them to have that kind of snow. Sierra Nevada summits could see two feet of new snow. High winds from the Sierra east through most of Nevada will add to the problems.
The storm is forecast to emerge into the High western Plains by Monday. This will launch several days of severe weather and tornadoes in the central Plains Monday, and in large areas of the Midwest Tuesday and Wednesday.
Severe weather and tornadoes will probably continue for at least a day or two after that, but forecast models are not yet clear on exactly where that might set up.
There's already lots of warm, super humid air in the southern Plains, which continues a flood risk today and tomorrow in much of Texas, Oklahoma and parts of Arkansas. Flood threats will continue amid the severe weather and tornadoes on Monday and beyond.
So yeah, we have another destructive mess for weather in much of the nation once again for the next few days.
As for us in Vermont, it still looks like we will blissfully enjoy the Goldilocks weather we've been having as the Midwest has had its terrible, and terrifying spring.
