Quick Saturday Afternoon Vermont Update: A Few Storms Could Cause Wind/Water Issues

We'll need to be on the lookout for some storms in Vermont today that could stir up some trouble in a few spots.

Radar image shortly after 1 p.m. today. Persistent line
of storms could cause local flooding. Other storms
developing could cause isolated instances of
damaging winds and torrential downpours.

As is usual in these cases, most of us will be fine, but a few of us in the Green Mountain State could be dealing with strong storms or local flooding.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has upgraded Vermont and surrounding areas from just regular scattered storms to the chance of isolated strong to severe storms during this afternoon and evening.

A few of the storms developing this afternoon might create some downbursts with small areas of damaging winds. There's no way to tell in advance exactly where this might happen. Just be alert for possible warnings. Especially if you're out on a boat or something like that.

The risk of storms goes from now (1 p.m. as I write this), to about sunset, give or take.

The other threat is local flooding. Especially in areas where the heaviest rain fell this morning. That's roughly on a line from roughly Rutland County to half way between White River Junction and St. Johnsbury.

When these storms moved into northern New Hampshire, they prompted flash flood watches, so you know they left a lot of rain.

If some towns -  mostly the ones that got the biggest downpours this morning -could see some local flash floods if a couple more storms hit these areas.

As of 1 p.m. I was watching a narrow line of storms from about Middlebury to Montpelier to Barton that were sort of training one after the other. So far, no trouble from these, but if they persist, we'll need to keep an eye on some gullywashers and erosion in a couple spots.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement on these storms, so you know they're keeping a wary eye on this patch of trouble for the afternoon.

As you can tell by the extremely humid, "air you can wear" feel to the outdoors today, the storms have plenty of moisture to work with to unleash some torrents.

Other storms were developing in western Rutland County, and I'm sure several other areas will see downpours and lightning this afternoon.

Not everybody will have a storm, but those who do should really notice them.

Tomorrow will stay warm and humid, but at least any storms will be isolated at best.
