Quick Noon Update: Cold Vermont, Florida Tornadoes, Florida Snow, Other Tidbits

Photo taken by Brandon Lucas shows a
large tornado around Fort Myers, Florida
this morning. Look closely or zoom in
and you can see lots of debris in the air.
The big winter storm continues to gather in the Southeast, and damage reports are mounting.

Tornadoes turned out to be surprisingly destructive in Florida this morning.  At least three were reported to have touched down, and there's a lot of damage in the Fort Myers area.

A mobile home park was hard hit, with several homes damaged or destroyed.  Video on social media showed a large tornado around  Fort Myers with much debris in the air. Reports are still coming in, so I don't have updates yet on deaths or injuries.

South Florida continues to face a risk of more tornadoes for a few more hours as the winter storm's strong cold front moves through the state.

As tornadoes were spinning further south, snow flurries extended as far south as northwestern Florida.

The ice storm continues to worsen in northern Georgia and the Carolinas. Up to a foot of snow has already fallen in the mountains of western North Carolina. A small distance to the east in the Carolinas and northeastern Georgia, freezing rain has already cut power to thousands of homes.

Up here in Vermont, there won't be any major updates on the storm until late this afternoon, and I'll pass them along when I get them.

The coldest temperature I've seen reported in Vermont so far this morning was 29 below in Averill, in northeastern Vermont. Many northern Vermont towns were in the 20s below this morning. The warmest place in Vermont early this morning was atop Mount Mansfield, where temperatures were in the single digits above zero while surrounding valleys were in the teens below zero. That was quite a temperature inversion.

As of noon, northern Vermont valleys had mostly risen above zero for the first time since Friday afternoon or evening.

Sunshine will continue to warm temperatures into the teens this afternoon, but you'll also start to see the first high clouds from the approaching storm start to come in later this afternoon.
