Another Cold Vermont Week Ahead. Something Exciting On The Weekend??

A snowy Sunday yesterday in South Hero, Vermont.
A little snow came with another Arctic front.
How about that? We managed to actually get a wee bit of snow in Vermont on Sunday as yet another cold front crashed through to maintain the frigid weather regime.  Unlike cold fronts last week, this one managed to squeeze out a tiny morsel of moisture, so our thin snow cover freshened up a bit.

This didn't amount to much, of course. Most places saw accumulations of an inch or less, with liquid equivalent of 0.05 inches or less for most of us.

The latest cold front was once again efficient at putting us in the deep freeze. Northern New York seems to be the target once again with this one.

Places like Massena, Ogdensburg, Watertown and Potsdam were all in the 20s below zero once again before dawn today, while Vermont was in the single numbers and teens below zero. Ogdensburg was 29 below, the coldest spot I've seen so far. In Vermont, the perennial cold spot Island Pond was at minus 24 early today.

This is a very quick shot of Arctic air, so we should manage to get up into the teens this afternoon.  That's still about ten degrees chillier than normal for this time of year, but at least it's not ridiculous.

It's going to be rinse and repeat for the upcoming week in terms of cold weather, as cold fronts from our friends in Canada continue to harass us.

The next one, tonight and tomorrow has a bit more oomph to it than the past few cold fronts in terms of snowfall, but that isn't saying much.  The National Weather Service in South Burlington says many of us should see a fluffy one to three inches of snow late tonight and early Tuesday, with maybe a few spot four inch totals in the higher elevations.

Water content with this expected snow is lame. Melt the upcoming snow down and you'd have 0.1 inches of water for most of us.

Snow blows across the Route 2 causeway
in South Hero on Sunday.

A few more snow showers introduce us to the next Arctic blast - sigh, again - for Tuesday into Thursday. This one will be of similar caliber to the one we had over the weekend and this morning.  That means highs again in the single digits Wednesday, and readings down in the teens below zero by Thursday morning.

Yet another Arctic front will approach Friday, but there's a twist.  That front might help draw some interesting weather northward.

There's now quite a bit of confidence a strong storm or nor'easter will lift northward Saturday off the coast.  Depending upon its path, this storm could be a real blockbuster for parts of the Northeast.

The question is how close does it come to Vermont?  If it stays well offshore, this will be another ho-hum event, at least for us. Closer to or along the coast could bring Vermont quite a substantial (and needed) snowstorm.

Nobody yet knows how this will play out. If you hear hype early this week of The Worst Storm Ever, that's just, well, hype. We'll have to wait and see how this goes. All the meteorologists are keeping an eye on this, and we'll know more as we go later into the week.
